The idea behind Stay Sofa

What was the idea and inspiration behind STAY?
STAY started with the idea of a solid wooden frame, built the way you would build a bed and not a sofa. We looked at Scandinavian daybeds and simple timber construction, where every joint is visible and every part has a job. The base is a low, open frame in solid wood, and the legs pass through it like beams. On top sits one generous mattress, with soft bolsters resting against it. We wanted a piece that feels as much at home in a small city apartment as in a summer house: calm, honest and made to stay.

How did you balance comfort with the clean, architectural expression? And a really nice sofa with a really comfortable bed?
We let the two parts do different jobs. The wooden frame gives the structure: straight lines, visible construction, nothing hidden. The upholstery gives the comfort: a deep mattress to sit and sleep on, and round bolsters that take the edge off the geometry. Because the seat is a real mattress and not a folded mechanism, the bed is not a compromise. Take the back cushions and bolsters off and you have a full, flat sleeping surface. Put them back and it becomes a sofa with a relaxed, lounging depth. It is one simple system, and nothing has to be unfolded or hidden away.

What do you hope people will feel when they sit down in STAY?
We hope they feel like staying. It should feel grounded and unhurried: the kind of place where you sink in with a book, stretch out for an afternoon nap, or end up talking late into the night. We want the solid wood and soft textiles to feel warm and familiar from the first time you sit down, and to get better as the piece gets used and lived with.
