Care and maintenance of your futon

The following guide applies to all our futon products: bed mattresses, mattresses for sofa beds, and futon furniture.

A futon is not just a piece of furniture. It is handmade. Fully or partially filled with natural materials. And designed to last for many years if it is treated with care.

Here are our best tips on how to take good care of your futon - whether you use it as a bed, sofa bed, or everyday seating.

We'll guide you through simple routines, practical tips, and little tricks that make a big difference in the long run.

Caring for your futon – why, how, and how often?

Futon products are made up of layers of primarily natural materials such as cotton, wool, and coconut fiber – and without springs. This means that the futon will settle and compress over time. This is completely normal and a natural characteristic of futons.

How quickly and how much it settles depends on several things: how often you use it, your body weight, the humidity in the room, and how well you take care of it. A heavier body or a humid indoor climate can increase compression. Therefore, especially for futon mattresses, we recommend that you use an airy base and fabrics made from natural materials so that the materials can breathe freely and retain their shape for longer.

I have stained my futon. What should I do?

Is there a stain? Use a damp cloth, preferably uncolored, and add a little clear dish soap. Gently dab the affected area. Wipe with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb excess moisture.

3 Easy Steps to Keep Your Futon Mattress in Shape

This guide is mainly for futon mattresses, but the same care tips apply to futon furniture too - keeping all your futon pieces fresh, supportive, and comfortable.

With simple routines, you can extend the life of your futon and ensure that it retains its elasticity and support.

By caring for your futon regularly, you ensure that you:

  • Maintain the shape and comfort of your futon
  • Extend its lifespan
  • Prevent moisture and mold buildup

It's a small effort that makes a big difference.

1. Turn and rotate the futon regularly

To ensure that the futon retains its shape, is well ventilated, and stays even, you should turn and rotate it regularly. We recommend that you turn the futon 180 degrees, swapping the head and foot ends, approximately every 3 to 4 weeks. This distributes the weight, helps it stay comfortable for longer, and prevents deformation.

2. Gently roll the futon to restore its shape

Cotton has a natural tendency to compress. To restore the futon's original shape and fullness, roll it in all directions. Start at one end and roll the futon loosely - not tightly, just enough to loosen the fibers so they can “rise” again and restore volume and elasticity.

3. Air the futon and avoid moisture

Leave the futon without a cover during the day, if possible. This helps it get rid of excess moisture and ensures that the materials stay fresh and airy.
